Dear readers,

I know you might be confused as to why I chose to start this post with different song lyrics with seemingly nothing in common. At a first glance, it’s true, they don’t seem to share a common theme. However, when you take a closer look, you will realize that they share one common trait: they all have make-up references. This enigmatic beginning was just my way of emphasising how important make-up is; not only in the society we live in, but also to help boost our inner confidence. Cosmetics help us express ourselves, portray an image, and draw attention to our preferred features. In fashion, makeup (or lack thereof) is extremely important to bring to life a look and a vision a designer has in mind. Likewise, in the entertainment industry, makeup is equally as important and can even be used as a marketing strategy. For instance, Taylor Swift, and Kim Kardashian are known for having bright red lips and a perfectly contoured face, respectively. In cosmetics, trends are constantly changing, and because I’ve shown you my favourite looks and trends for Autumn/Winter 2015-16 from the four different fashion weeks (and because I’m not emotionally ready to let go of fashion month!) I thought I would also write a post on my favourite make up and beauty trends from different fashion shows. The purpose of this prevenient post is so that you get time to decide which one of the trendy colours looks best on you, so you have time to save up (because darling, we all know good makeup is $$ expensive), and because you might stumble upon one of the items or fashionable colours listed, on a sale! But don’t worry, I will also write a post on Spring Makeup Trends –  just stay tuned! For now, discover my favourite AW 15/16 beauty trends straight from the runway, and start making plans for your next shopping spree!

1. Nude Healthy Look

00020h_426x639 00030h_426x639 (1) 00040h_426x639 00050h_426x639 00080h_426x639 00100h_426x639 00310h_426x639 DSC_021_426x639 DSC_026_426x639

Main take home message: skin is inLooking healthy, and natural is super trendy right now so make sure you invest in a good facial cleansing pack, a hydrating moisturiser (with UV protection for daytime!), and foundation suited to your skin type, and a splendid blusher to keep you from looking too pale! The autumn/winter 2015 shows featured girls with perfect skin, lightly flushed cheeks and with a subtle shading – which are the ingredients to create the “Rich Girl Look”. This nude effect was seen in many of the shows, for instance Donna Karan, Balmain, and Stella McCartney.

2. Bold, Graphic, Beautiful

00000h_426x639 00010h_426x639 00020h_426x639 00200h_426x639 00250h_426x639 00310h_426x639 (1)

These looks presented on the runway let they eyes do the talking by leaving the rest of the face natural and fresh-looking. Depending on the event, you can inspire yourself by these different bold looks. For instance, if you’re up for a cool night out in town why not copy Chanel’s cat-eye look in matt shadow, and complement it with lightly pink-stained lips (3rd photo), or even go for a graphic but less extensive cat eye, done with a liquid liner (1st photo). If you are feeling more adventurous and want to manifest your wilder side, why not get inspiration from Dior (5th photo) and go for a colour-blocked eye by applying eye-shadow in a dark shade e.g. magenta, purple or blue, in a graphic shape and perfect your look with several coats of mascara! Similarly, if you are feeling artistic, slightly rebellious, and painfully cool, why not replicate the makeup seen at Fendi (4th photo)? The make-up genius behind this look, Peter Phillips painted stripes across the lids for a feathered appearance, and completed the look wit several layers of mascara. This is a look I’ll definitely be experimenting on myself in Autumn!

3. Doll-like lashes

DSC_031_426x63900040h_426x639 00250h_426x639 DSC_030_426x63900290h_426x639  maxmara-backstage-8-getty-vogue-26feb15_426x639

Doll-like lashes were a prominent focus in many runway shows this season. In previous years the word mascara was almost forbidden and many make-up artists preferred the clean bare lashes look. This season however, the story is completely the opposite: mascara is back, big time. This doll-like look was seen in Giambattista Valli, Blumarine, Alberta Ferretii, amongst others. If you already use the doll-like look regularly and want to try something different and go that extra mile, you can either take MaxMara’s example and create a Marilyn Monroe look by applying pink lipstick and black eyeliner (6th photo), or apply slightly smudged black liner. If you are in a fun and creative mood you could attempt to copy Val Garland’s look for Mary Katrantzou and emphasising the lower lashes with a of of black liner in the centre (3rd photo). One of my favourite beauty trends was for Rodarte. Make-up artist James Kaliardos glued strings of time Swarovski crystals to models’ lower lash lines (5th photo). This was accompanied by a perfect skin, sheer eye-shadow and a flush of blush on the cheeks. I will definitely be trying this look!

4. Strong Groomed Eyebrows

00060h_426x639 00070h_426x639 00110h_426x639 00120h_426x639 00180h_426x639 00210h_426x639 00260h_426x639 00280h_426x639 DSC_025_426x639

Another big trend this season seen in many shows was groomed brows. In this segment I’ve just outlined my favourite and the strongest eyebrows, but you’ll notice that in the other trends featured in this post, a lot of the models also have groomed eyebrows. In some shows models also seem to have their brows brushed upwards…so that is something you might consider trying (I’ve certainly seen it in fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni). However, I strongly advise you to take a look at YouTube tutorials or get advice from your local make up store e.g. Sephora on how to emphasise your eyebrows without making them look unnatural – grow them out if you can from now until then!

5. Cheekbone Extraordinaire

00020h_426x639 00030h_426x639 00040h_426x639 00100h_426x639 00100h_426x639f 00150h_426x639 00300h_426x639 maxmara-backstage-1-getty-vogue-26feb15_426x639 sscdv

This season was all about enhancing natural features. As with the eyebrow trend, a lot of the runway models had their skin contoured and sculpted in order to create a greater definition in the cheekbones! Lisa Butler created sculpted, natural look at Isabel Marant, using concealer only where needed. As I mentioned earlier Kim Kardashian is known for contouring her skin, click here to see how she does it! Alternatively, take a look at youtube tutorials to get a more detailed guide! You can complement you sculpted skin with nude, or slightly tinted lips with a similar shade eye-shadow.

6. Peach Time

_MIC8989_426x639 _MIC9014_426x639 00020h_426x639 00030h_426x639 00170h_426x639 00240h_426x639 00310h_426x639 00380h_426x639 DSC_036_320x480

In some runway shows, models walked down the runway with a peachy healthy look. At Chloé, Lucia Peroni created this heatlhy, flushed look by applying blusk on the looks with a small amount of colour on the lips, (1st & 2nd photo). At Pucci, Lisa Butler applied an orange-brown shade to the eyes and cheekbones for definition (3rd photo). A super cute trend was seen in the Topshop show where models look flushed and healthy with drawn-on freckles an lipstick on the cheeks and lips for a windswept look! Just be careful not to apply too much blush, you don’t want to look orange!

7. Smoky Cat Eye

00010h_426x639 00020h_426x639 00030h_426x639 00100h_426x639 00160h_426x639 00190h_426x639 00360h_426x639 00790h_426x639 FRA_0177_426x639

Another trend on the runway was the smokey eye (here I combined it with the cat-eye and waterline liner looks seen). At Roberto Cavalli (3rd photo), models had black and silver liner smudged beneath the eyes to make it look like they slept-in (you’ve probably done this look before..only not on purpose). At Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg, models also had a smoky eye look as they walked down the catwalkSimilarly, at Versace, the world’s most wanted makeup artist, Pat McGrath applied black eyeliner all around the waterline (a trend also seen at Lanvin – 6th photo) smudged slightly for an imperfect finish; a look that was completed with heavy mascara. This season it was clearly all about the waterline kohl – a look that will guarantee give you an instant modern cool-girl effect. To play it up a bit, diffuse the kohl down through the lashes in a reverse smoke effect to give it that extra edge! Another cool trend that really never went out of style is the cat-eye flick. This was seen in Dolce&Gabbana (4th photo) as well as Oscar de la Renta (8th photo).

8. Berry Tinted lips

 00080h_426x639 00200h_426x639 00230h_426x639 00240h_426x639 00280h_426x639 00370h_426x639
Although a lot of nude shades were seen this season, the only other prominent colour seen was different shades of red  berry. For instance, at Missoni, Lucia Pieroni applied a sheer berry stain to models’ lips and cheeks creating that healthy look. Similarly, for March Jacobs, Nars created a matt berry lip which was combined with the groomed eyebrows and grey eyeshadow (2nd and 3rd photos). Moreover, this trend was seen in D&G, combined with a classic cat-eye flick! There was barely a red lip seen backstage, except at Philip Lim where models had their lips tinted a matt brick-red (5th photo). It was also good to see models sporting the lip gloss again! If you’re feeling rather special, you may also chose to create your own shade by mixing different lipstick tonalities (4th photo).

To conclude this segment, I’ll summarise different looks and ways these major trends could be applied:
– Nude, healthy looking/outdoors look, combined with a strong, groomed eyebrow, and a dewy skin.
or
– Peachy summer skin, accompanied by a doll-like lash, and of course, well-groomed eyebrows.
or
– waterline kohl, with a nude skin, and a berry lip to complete the look
or
– a bold graphic eye design, topped up with layers of mascara and a nude skin!
I hope this post gave you plenty of ideas of how to do your make-up come fall! Let me know if you have any favourite trend, or if you have any general questions about what make-up brand to use, or what style suits your skin type best! For now, I leave you with a quote…

  4. Hi Mimi,

This is a great post! I really like the song lyrics when you begin to read the blog. Yes, I can’t seem to let go of Paris Fashion Week too! I definitely need to get some fashion staple items.

I think the peachy cheeks, berry lips and nude healthy look would suit me. (Not all at once!)
Knowing from experience, I have to be careful with bold, graphic line and smoky eyes, as I realised my eye shape differs to others. End up looking like a racoon! Hehe

    Which looks do you prefer?

Definitely keep up the good work. Btw, McQueen at V&A is very very good 🙂

    1. Hi June! I love all these trends! I like to play with eye makeup so I will definitely try those smoky eye looks more often come fall! I love peachy vibes too, as well as berry lips! I also tend to do the ‘doll-like’ lashes look! I would be more catious doing the bold and graphic looks though!
Also, I am going to the V&A this weekend for the McQueen exhibition!

  5. Great post! It’s so interesting. I’m trying to get in the habit of wearing more makeup when I go out, so it’s great to get some inspiration from here! I normally just wear either lipstick or a tiny bit of eyeshadow. 🙂
